Boeing has handed to the U.S. Navy a system the company designed to store fuel cell energy derived from solar, wind and other renewable resources.
The service branch will install the system on its microgrid at a Naval Facilities Engineering Command facility in California to test the platform’s capability to supply electricity for military and commercial clients, Boeing said Monday.
The reversible solid oxide fuel cell-based platform works to convert stored hydrogen into electricity that the power grid requires.
Boeing initially operated the fuel cell system on Southern California Edison’s power grid in Huntington Beach, California.
