Iridium Communications Inc. has received an $8.57 million task order to update the network gateway of the Defense Department in preparation for the military’s planned transition to the company’s next-generation global satellite constellation.
DoD and its partners will gain access to airtime service for voice, data, paging and distributed tactical communications services under the contract, Iridium said Thursday.
“Iridium is proud to work with the DoD and enable global and reliable communications for the United States warfighters and other Defense Information Systems Agency approved users,” said Scott Scheimreif, executive vice president of government solutions at Iridium.
The company says will continue its collaboration with DoD to modernize warfighter communications through the 66-satellite Iridium NEXT constellation.
Iridium NEXTÂ is scheduled for launch in 2016 to provide bandwidth and data communications to users.
