Boeing will work with Mexico’s airports and auxiliary services agency and Aeromexico on a program to research and develop aviation biofuel resources in Mexico.
The Potosinian Institute of Scientific and Technological Research will oversee the four-year biofuel initiative that will involve nine research centers and 17 companies and other institutions, Boeing said Wednesday.
Research work will cover aviation biofuel market development, biomass sourcing, lifecycle and sustainability assessment and fuel production with a focus on Mexico’s biofuel feedstocks such as sewage sludge, salt-tolerant Salicornia and jatropha.
“Sustainable jet fuel will play a critical role in reducing aviation’s carbon emissions and will bring a new and innovative industry to Mexico,†said Marc Allen, president of Boeing International.
Other companies and institutions involved in the project include the U.S. Joint BioEnergy Institute, Mexican Petroleum Institute, Pemex, QENER, Tratamientos Reciclados del Sureste and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in United Arab Emirates.
