A business unit of United Technologies Corp. has handed to the U.S. Navy the first sonar dome window for integration with the service branch’s cruisers, destroyers and other vessels under a five-year contract.
The UTC Aerospace Systems-built rubber-based sonar dome window works to protect the naval ship’s sonar transducer array and help the vessel detect underwater targets, UTC said Tuesday.
The business unit received the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract from the Navy in April 2015.
UTC Aerospace Systems’ engineered polymer products team manufactures the sonar domes at its Florida facility for installation onboard the Navy’s CG-47, FFG-7 and DDG-51-class ships.
The EPP team at UTC Aerospace Systems also provides sonar dome repair, inspection and installation services to the service branch.
