Thales Alenia Space has been selected to produce an additional eight satellites for O3b Networks’ medium Earth orbit constellation.
The satellites will add to the existing twelve operational satellites in orbit used by O3b Networks to supply trunking and mobile backhaul connectivity to telecommunication firms, Thales said Thursday.
The new satellites are set for launch and integration in 2018.
“The achieved in-orbit performances of the satellites constellation already in service have allowed O3b to significantly increase their market shares and we are proud to contribute to O3b growth,†said Jean Loic Galle, president and CEO of Thales Alenia Space.
The Ka-band satellites are located at an altitude of close to 5,000 miles.
