Steve Durbin, managing director of nonprofit Information Security Forum, has outlined five security trends that he says will dominate the coming year, IDG Connect reported Monday.
Durbin said 2016 will see an increase in the size, severity and complexity of cyber threats, according to the report.
“I say that because increasingly I think we are seeing a raised level awareness about the fact that operating in cyber brings about its own peculiarities,†he added.
One prediction that Durbin says will take shape in 2016 is the threat of collateral damage from what he describes as “unintended consequences of state intervention,†IDG reports.
He also expects big data to bring about “big problems†as data analytics contains a human element in it, the report says.
Durbin said that unless organizations recognize that human element, they will put themselves at risk, according to IDG.
The rapid adoption of mobile devices and Internet of Things will also prompt developers to sacrifice security in favor of speed and reduced cost, Durbin said.
He added that cybercrime will remain a threat in 2016 and that the information security skills gap will continue to widen in the next year, IDG reports.
