Harris’ Dennis Moran: DoD Needs ‘Holistic Plan’ for Faster Internet of Things Adoption

Dennis Moran, vice president of government business development at Harris Corp., has said the Defense Department should craft a “holistic plan” in order to facilitate the adoption of Internet-of-Things-based devices by warfighters.

Moran, a retired U.S. Army major general, wrote in a C4ISR & Networks article published Tuesday that he believes such a plan could help expedite the integration of commercial-off-the-shelf technology platforms with current systems for use in tactical missions.

He also called on DoD to collaborate with the National Security Agency to develop risk assessment and security guidance and seek the department CIO’s advice on how to address connectivity concerns with regard to the use of IoT-based platforms.

The Pentagon should also involve its acquisition, technology and logistics office in the development of guidelines on the procurement of IoT-enabled systems, Moran added.

“When the DoD is able to define common standards and protocols, industry partners will be able to focus and justify their investments in R&D, which will ultimately support faster adoption and integration of IoT-enabled technologies,” he noted.
