The Department of Homeland Security’s science and technology directorate has awarded five contracts worth $7.8 million combined to universities and other institutions to perform research and develop tools designed to safeguard cyber physical networks from cyber attacks.
DHS said Thursday the Cyber Physical Systems Security program seeks cyber defense infrastructures for automobiles, medical devices and building control systems.
“This interconnectivity brings significant conveniences but also introduces new cyber threats,” said Dan Massey, CPSSEC program manager at S&T directorate.
“The goal of the CPSSEC program is to ensure secure designs become an operational requirement.”
Recipients and their respective awards are provided below:
- HRL Laboratories, a Boeing–General Motors joint venture – $2.5 million
- Medical Device Innovation, Safety and Security Consortium – $1.8 million
- New York University – $1.4 million
- University of Michigan – $1.2 million
- Kansas State University – $900,000
