DARPAThe Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has selected 10 participants in its Atoms to Product program, which seeks technology that can manufacture millimeter-scale products or materials out of nanometer-scale pieces.

DARPA said Tuesday researchers will work to address the gap between nano-scale and millimeter-scale components through fabrication from atoms to microns then microns to millimeters.

“The ability to assemble atomic-scale pieces into practical components and products is the key to unlocking the full potential of micromachines,” said John Main, DARPA program manager.

“[A2P]… aims to bring the benefits of microelectronic-style miniaturization to systems and products that combine mechanical, electrical and chemical processes.”

The selected participants are:

  • Boston University
  • Draper Laboratory
  • Embody
  • Harvard University
  • HRL Laboratories
  • PARC
  • SRI
  • University of Notre Dame
  • Voxtel
  • Zyvex Labs
