California and Northern Virginia were respectively the first- and second-largest states in terms of federal contract spending between 2010 and 2014 if the latter region was a state, a new study says.
The r said Monday California received approximately $255 billion in federal non-payroll, defense and non-defense contracts over that four-year period and Northern Virginia got nearly $219 billion for those same items.
NVRC examined more than 1.17 million federal procurement transactions recorded between Oct. 1, 2010 and Sept. 30, 2014.
Virginia altogether took in close to $289 billion with 75 percent concentrated in Northern Virginia, 18 percent in the state’s Hampton Roads region and other jurisdictions with the remaining 8 percent.
Hampton Roads and other Virginia locations outside of Northern Virginia would rank seventh in the study’s list of the 10 largest recipient states of procurement money, NVRC says.
Fairfax County received the largest share of contracting dollars between 2010 and 2014 at 44 percent with Arlington County second at 15 percent, according to a PowerPoint presentation of the commission’s findings.
Approximately 90 percent of the $9 billion in overall federal budget cuts between 2010 and 2014 related to sequestration impacted defense spending.
In that time, Northern Virginia felt the state’s largest blow from the spending reductions as that region absorbed 76 percent of the cuts with Hampton Roads at 11 percent.
