Forty-seven percent of public and private sector information technology professionals who responded to an IID-sponsored survey said their organizations have experienced a material security breach in the past year.
The study, conducted by Ponemon Institute, also found that 65 percent of respondents believe their companies or agencies could have avoided the cybersecurity breaches through sharing of threat intelligence, IID said Wednesday.
“Just like the bad guys share ways to carry out their attacks, organizations must also share actionable and timely ways to stop threats,” said Larry Ponemon, founder and chairman of Ponemon Institute.
Sixty-three percent of IT personnel surveyed said they believe exchanging security threat information can improve an organization’s cyber posture and 63 percent see data exchange as one method to protect the U.S.’ critical infrastructure assets.
Respondents consider liability, trust and resource issues their biggest hurdle in sharing cybersecurity data.
Ponemon Institute polled 692 IT employees from the government, financial services, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries for the IID-backed research.
