The Department of Health and Human Services has teamed up with OptumLabs, a healthcare research center co-founded by Mayo Clinic and Optum, in an effort to utilize OptumLabs’ databases of de-identified patient data for healthcare research.

OptumLabs will work with HHS’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to compare identified trends in the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey with commercial insurance claims data in OptumLabs databases, Optum said Wednesday.

“We are eager to collaborate with OptumLabs and its partners on a variety of initiatives that harness the power of health data to improve patient care and outcomes,” said Susannah Fox, chief technology officer at HHS.

OptumLabs and other HHS agencies will also collaborate on healthcare economics and population health research.
