HARRIS1Harris Corp. has opened a $1.9 million facility that aims to provide a venue for science and engineering students at Florida Institute of Technology to design, build and test new technology platforms.

The Harris Student Design Center is located within Florida Institute of Technology’s Melbourne campus, Harris said Friday.

Bill Brown, chairman, president and CEO at Harris, participated in the opening ceremony attended by several school officials, such as Anthony Catanese, Florida Tech’s president and CEO; and T. Dwayne McCay, executive vice president and chief operating officer at the institute.

Wayne Price also reports on Florida Today that Alton Romig, president of the National Academy of Engineering and vice president of engineering and advanced systems at Lockheed Martin, was the guest speaker during the opening of the 11,500-square-foot facility.

Brown said the company plans to hire future engineers for the new design center at Florida Tech.

The building has a brainstorming and meeting room, a 2.5-ton crane, electronics rooms, welding stations, an acid etching and parts cleaning area and a spray booth, Price notes.
