DRS Technologies and BAE Systems are working to develop a wireless night-vision targeting technology for the U.S. Army as part of the service branch’s rapid target acquisition project, National Defense Magazine reported Wednesday.
Sandra Erwin writes that the companies separately work to build the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle and Family of Weapon Sights Individual components but will collaborate to provide interoperability for the system.
“The real possibility exists that a soldier could employ an FWS-I from one vendor and expect it to work with the other vendor’s ENVG,” Lt. Col. Timothy Fuller, product manager for soldier maneuver sensors at the Army, said to the magazine.
The requirement for cross-vendor interoperability calls for BAE and DRS to share information about their respective technologies before they move to the competition for production orders, the report said.
BAE received a $434 million contract while DRS received a $367 million deal for the targeting system, which consists of a riflescope that is wirelessly connected to night-vision goggles for the transmission of video.
