DARPA Extends Xerox Subsidiary’s Disappearing Electronics Contract; Gregory Whiting Comments

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has extended a contract with Xerox‘s PARC subsidiary for continued development work on a transient electronics technology.

PARC made the Disintegration Upon Stress Release Trigger for DARPA’s Vanishing Programmable Resources program as the agency seeks to develop electronic systems that dissappear on command, Xerox said Wednesday.

“This technology can help commercial organizations as well as individuals to protect personal data,” said Gregory Whiting, DUST principal investigator and manager of the novel electronics area in PARC’s electronic materials and devices laboratory.

“Our approach is designed to be compatible with off-the-shelf electronic devices and fabrication processes,” Whiting added.

PARC designed the transient technology based on stress-engineered glass to disintegrate electronic devices when triggered.
