Northrop Grumman has received a $58,706,242 million contract to test the U.S. Marine Corps’ ground weapon locating radar mode.
Marines use the mode to toggle between air surveillance, air defense, ground weapon locating and air traffic control through the AN/TPS-80 ground/air task-oriented radar, Northrop said Monday.
Roshan Roeder, director of ground based tactical radars, land and self-protection systems division at Northrop, said the company will use an open architecture approach to combine ground and airborne applications in developing systems that facilitate upgrades.
The GWLR software works to analyze ballistic trajectories and impact points of incoming rockets, mortars and artillery rounds.
GWLR complements the Defense Department-developed, ground-based Active Electronically Scanned Array radar.
