Coalition forces have completed a new at-sea demonstration of integrated air and missile defense capability with the interception of a ballistic missile target using a Raytheon-built Standard Missile-3 fired from USS Ross.
The U.S. Navy said Tuesday the Maritime Theater Missile Defense Forum’s ASD-15 event featured a scenario in which an SM-3 Block IA guided interceptor engaged the missile target over the northern Atlantic Ocean.
The service added that ASD-15 marks the first time an SM-3 was launched on a non-U.S. range and a ballistic missile target was intercepted in the European theater.
“ASD-15 shows that with communication, collaboration and commitment, nations can come together and flawlessly defend against a complex threat scenario,” said Navy Vice Adm. James Foggo, U.S. 6th Fleet commander.
The U.K. hosted the U.S.-facilitated demonstration and other participants included Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain.
