The U.S. Zero Waste Business Council has awarded a silver-level certification to Northrop Grumman“™s aircraft integration facility in Palmdale, California.
Northrop“™s Palmdale site becomes the first aerospace manufacturing facility in the country to obtain the certificate after it achieved a waste diversion rate of at least 90 percent from incineration and landfills, the company said Wednesday.
“As the largest manufacturer in the Antelope Valley, it is our duty to remain cognizant of what we can do for our environment,“ said Andy Reynolds, Palmdale site manager and vice president of global manufacturing at Northrop Grumman.
The company“™s aircraft production center also attained a 70 percent cost reduction in waste management efforts following the implementation of the zero waste program.
Northrop said the certification also supports the company“™s goal to divert 70 percent of its solid waste from landfills by 2020 as part of its environmental sustainability objectives.
