The Army Contracting Command has issued a solicitation for proposals from industry for key components of its new Modular Handgun System as a replacement for its M9 pistol, the Army Times reported Tuesday.
Kyle Jahner writes the production and supply contract for the new handgun system could be worth at least $580 million.
The service branch plans to have a new XM17 handgun that can accommodate various grip sizes, laser sights and different accessories and contains features for ergonomics and improved accuracy, according to the report.
The Army will also consider proposals for larger bullets and combinations of handguns and rounds for different calibers.
The service will accept proposals through Jan. 28, Jahner reports.
