WallopsHarkins Contracting has been awarded a $5.6 million contract to construct a single-story mission launch command center at NASA‘s Wallops Island, Virginia-based flight facility.

NASA said Thursday it would use the center to manage and interface with rockets, payloads, launch pad support systems when the agency conducts spaceflight missions from the Wallops Flight Facility.

The company will design the center with a steel frame and concrete masonry exterior structure, curtain walls, glass and metal storefront, a modified bitumen roofing system and other Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver standard-compliant building features.

Harkins will also work on storm water structures; communication ducts; electrical systems; heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment; and interior architectures.

According to NASA, the command center will support future launches of commercial cargo resupply spacecraft to the International Space Station, military rockets and the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer.
