NASA has received a new telescope structure built by Northrop Grumman for integration with the James Webb Space Telescope.
The structure is designed to hold the hexagonal mirrors and other optical components of the space telescope, Northrop said Wednesday.
Webb is a space observatory designed to capture images of undiscovered planets, galaxies and other distance space objects and NASA’s collaborative effort with the Canadian Space Agency and the European Space Agency,
“The telescope’s beryllium mirrors are held together nearly motionlessly in space by the telescope structure, which also acts as a stable platform during ground test operations and launch,” said Scott Texter, a telescope manager at Northrop.
Northrop is the prime contractor for Webb’s space observatory, space vehicle and sunshield.
