RaytheonJLENSThe U.S. Army has launched a second Raytheon-built aerostat to provide radar coverage for the Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System, C4ISR & Networks reported Thursday.

Amber Corrin writes the service launched the airship at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland to support North American Aerospace Defense Command‘s over-the-horizon surveillance operations.

The 250-foot, helium-filled aerostat joins the first one launched in December, which the Army and Raytheon have tested for integration with NORAD’s command-and-control systems.

Corrin reports that both are tethered to the ground and float at 10,000 feet to scan the airspace for missile threats with radar technology.
