A Northrop Grumman subsidiary has completed its work to design a deformable mirror for a solar telescope.
AOA Xinetics engineered the ground-based Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Maui, Hawaii with funds from the National Science Foundation, Northrop said Thursday.
The National Solar Observatory and the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy led development work on the telescope in an effort to help scientists study the impacts of magnetic fields on Earth and the sun’s physical properties.
The telescope is designed to provide high-resolution images of the sun using new adaptive optics technology.
AOA Xinetics built the system with 1,600 actuators for distortion-free imagery, Northrop says.
