Lockheed Martin and StemRad have started to study the potential application of StemRad’s radiation shielding technology to deep-space operations.
The goal is to modify StemRad 360 Gamma into a radiation protection system that is intended to help protect astronauts during missions, Lockheed said Monday.
Randy Sweet, business development director for civil space at Lockheed Martin, said the company will apply its human spaceflight and nanomaterials engineering to “evaluate the viability for this type of radiation shielding in deep-space” in collaboration with StemRad.
The StemRad radiation shielding technology is designed to help protect first responders from gamma radiation exposure.
Space Florida and MATIMOP, the executive agency of the Office of the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Economy of Israel, will contribute financial support for the joint project.
