Lockheed Martin has provided digitized and coded information on world events from March 1995 to March 2014 to the open source Harvard Dataverse Network in support of research efforts on socio-political conflict.
The company said Thursday its Advanced Technology Laboratories organization supplied the data gathered from 23 million news stories to help researchers perform forecasting, modeling and longitudinal studies.
“We’ve spent years ingesting and digesting news reports to help the government prepare for and respond to instability, and we want the world to benefit from that analysis,” said Mark Hoffman, a program manager at Lockheed.
“[Researchers] can use the power of data analytics to help forecast unrest in the future.”
The collection and coding of the data is part of the Lockheed-led Integrated Crisis Early Warning System program with Raytheon‘s BBN Technologies subsidiary, Lustick Consulting, Strategic Analysis Enterprises and Duke University.
