biometricsThe U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency has partnered with Unisys to build and test a facial recognition system designed to help CBP personnel identify people who attempt to enter the U.S. with fraudulent passports.

Unisys said Thursday the platform is designed to capture and compare facial images of travelers with their electronic passports’ photos.

The company and the agency recently completed an initial testing of the face recognition technology at Virginia’s Dulles International Airport.

“As cybersecurity and physical technologies continue to converge, technologies such as biometrics are playing an increasingly essential role in keeping us safe online and in the real world,” said Amy Rall, group vice president for the homeland security division at Unisys’ federal business.

Unisys helped develop the technology under a Land Border Integration contract awarded in 2010.

CBP is looking to test the biometric software application to other U.S. airports.
