Amazon Web Services and Community Energy will build and operate a new solar farm in Accomack County, Virginia, that will work to generate 170,000 megawatt hours of solar energy a year beginning October 2016.
AWS said Wednesday the future 80-megawatt Amazon Solar Farm US East facility will power AWS Cloud data centers in the region under a power purchase agreement.
Jerry Hunter, vice president of infrastructure at AWS, noted that the project supports the company’s efforts toward 100-percent renewable energy usage for its global infrastructure.
“I look forward to working with Amazon and Accomack to get this project online as we continue our efforts to make Virginia a global leader in the renewable energy sector,” added Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
The PPA for Amazon Solar Farm US East joins the January 2015 PPA for Amazon Wind Farm (Fowler Ridge) in Indiana, which AWS said will work to generate 500,000 megawatt hours of wind power a year.
