Lockheed Martin and Wyle Laboratories have submitted research proposals for a new program that seeks to examine potential health issues that astronauts may encounter during deep-space missions.
The companies’ submissions are among 24 research projects that will receive $12.9 million in total funds from NASA and the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, NSBRI said Thursday.
Researchers would study the impacts of the space environment on astronauts’ physical and mental health, behavior and work performance as well as develop technologies to help address the medical conditions.
NASA’s Human Research Program works to develop strategies for mission planners and system developers to manage spaceflight health risks.
NSBRI is backed by the space agency and studies health issues associated with lengthy trips in space.
