Military vehicleLockheed Martin has chosen Saft to provide Li-ion battery systems for the production phase of the U.S. Army‘s Joint Light Tactical Vehicles program.

Saft said Tuesday it will continue as Lockheed’s JLTV battery supplier following previous agreements to provide batteries for the program’s engineering and manufacturing development phase and production readiness review.

“This partnership represents the growing adoption of lithium-ion battery technology to support the increasingly higher power demands of today’s modern military vehicles,” said Thomas Alcide, president of Saft America and general manager of Saft’s specialty battery group.

The company noted that its 28V, 60Ah batteries will power the JLTVs’ starting mechanism, ignition, lights and silent watch mission as well as the recharge of night sights, GPS devices and other personal electronics.

The Army seeks to utilize the vehicles as replacement for the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles.
