Tiffany Sargent, Internet of Things senior solutions architect and principal engineer at Intel Federal LLC, has recommended steps for agencies to start the adoption of complete IoT technologies.
Sargent wrote in an opinion article for GCN published Monday that both government agency information technology and operations managers are working piecemeal to add IoT sensors and gateways to their existing services.
She also advised organizations to identify problems and opportunities they intend to address.
“For example, if you have sensors that send a signal every five seconds indicating that a room’s temperature has not changed, you’re wasting money,†Sargent said.
“Instead, insert a gateway appliance that would make the current sensors smart enough to send a signal only if something in the environment changed that crosses a specific threshold of concern,†she wrote.
Sargent also recommends that agencies work with a systems architect who has knowledge of what IoT elements to use in collecting and computing data.
“Consider where the users who want the analytics are,†she said.
