green energyGeneral Dynamics continues to work with Massachusetts-based utility provider Eversource Energy in efforts aimed at reducing the energy footprint of its mission systems group’s Pittsfield facility by more than two million kilowatt hours a year.

Conservation efforts at the building began last fall and include the replacement of outdoor light fixtures with LED products and the adoption of a centralized control system that automatically adjusts to the site’s energy requirements, the company said Monday.

The firm, which leases the site from the U.S. Navy, uses the facility to perform engineering work on the Pentagon’s littoral combat ship program and other defense initiatives.

According to Dan Rochford, Navy commanding officer with the Program Management Office Strategic Systems Program, Shipboard Systems, General Dynamics’ efforts to increase energy efficiency directly impact the Navy’s buying power and warfighter capability.

“By reducing energy costs, General Dynamics is proactively decreasing and controlling their overhead costs, which directly influence our Navy programs here at the General Dynamics facility,” Rochford said.
