Peter Romness, cybersecurity programs lead at Cisco‘s U.S. public sector business, has warned that Internet of Everything technology could present cybersecurity risks for government organizations, he wrote in a Federal Times article published Monday.
Romness said agencies need to adopt tools that would secure both their operational technology and information technology networks in a connected environment.
He believes a cybersecurity framework should cover visibility-driven, platform-based and threat-focused strategies.
“Government systems should focus on detecting, understanding and removing threats efficiently and share the intelligence gained with other departments and agencies that could be vulnerable to the same threat actor,” he added.
A proper platform will work to help an organization manage security controls and risks as well as centralize enterprise network security management, according to Romness.
He cited a Cisco report that forecasts public-sector organizations could generate $4.6 trillion in value by 2022 through IoE.
“Government agencies should embrace the power of connections but realize value can only be achieved through secure networks.”
