BAE Systems has partnered with the University of Birmingham to develop augmented reality systems applications in an effort to help warfighters control their environments in real time.
The virtual reality concept is meant to combine real and virtual settings for emergency response and military battlefield operations, BAE Systems said Monday.
Nick Colosimo, futurist at BAE Systems, said the concept’s approach is to “identify the optimal balance between the real world and the virtual†in order to provide insights to operators and help protect troops.
With a portable command center and headset, military commanders will have tools to direct operations with the creation of a virtual workspace, BAE says.
The command center is a briefcase sized tool intended to help operators address a scenario from a semi-virtual environment in a remote location.
An operator wears a virtual reality headset and interactive gloves to monitor situations via virtual video screens and manipulate environments, BAE says.
Pilots can also customize environments with what BAE Systems calls a “wearable cockpit.â€
