Amazon‘s cloud computing business posted revenue of $1.57 billion for the first quarter of its 2015 fiscal year, up almost 50 percent from the prior year period, the Washington Post reported Thursday.
Amrita Jayakumar writes Amazon Web Services‘ performance is partly attributed to its cloud information technology services contracts in the government sector.
“We always knew that this was a huge market,†Teresa Carlson, (a Wash100 recipient) vice president of AWS’ told the newspaper.
AWS has provided cloud infrastructure and support services to the U.S. Defense Department, Central Intelligence Agency and other federal agencies, according to The Post.
Jayakumar said the business also works with other technology firms that hold experience working with public sector organizations through a partner network.
The Wall Street Journal reported that AWS now accounts for approximately 7 percent of Amazon’s overall revenue.
