Ball Aerospace & Technologies is approaching the environmental testing phase of its work on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s Joint Polar Satellite System after the integration of four out of the satellite’s five instruments.
The company said Monday it has integrated the Cross-track Infrared Sounder, Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite, Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite-Nadir and Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System with JPSS-1.
“Better forecasts are a critical enabler of what NOAA envisions as ‘A Weather-Ready Nation’ and Ball is proud to do its part,” said Cary Ludtke, vice president and general manager of Ball Aerospace’s operational space business.
The four instruments plus the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder, which will be integrated later this year, will fly on the polar-orbiting JPSS-1 satellite when it launches in the second quarter of 2017 to assist weather forecasting operations.
According to Ball, environmental testing is scheduled for early 2016 and delivery is due late 2016.
