Raytheon has helped complete a demonstration of a backup-power microgrid system that it developed with partners Primus Power, Advanced Energy and the Energy Department‘s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
The technology combines Raytheon’s Intelligent Power and Energy Management Microgrid Controller, Primus Power’s EnergyPod 706kVA powertrain and Advanced Energy’s 100kW solar inverters to support off-grid operation, Raytheon said Thursday.
It stores high-penetration renewable energy for use as backup power for critical operations rather than using fuel-burning generators, the company added.
The test was held at NREL’s Energy Systems Integration Facility to demonstrate control features and system and component functions, which Raytheon said will guide the demonstration system to be fielded around June at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California.
According to Raytheon, the IPEM Microgrid Controller also features energy management capabilities that work to enable the optimal and efficient use of renewable energy resources.
