BAE Systems‘ U.S. subsidiary will add a new dry dock to its shipyard in San Diego, California, under a $100 million expansion project to update its ship maintenance, repair and modernization work, Seapower Magazine reported Friday.
According to the publication, BAE Systems Inc. will purchase a new dry dock and perform infrastructure improvements at the existing facility.
“Our primary strategy and mission in San Diego is to support the U.S. Navy and its rebalance to the Pacific,” Erwin Bieber, president of platforms and services at the subsidiary, said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new pier at the San Diego shipyard.
“Our continuing investment in the region further demonstrates our commitment to San Diego and recognizes the important role it plays in our strategy.”
The new Pier 4 includes features such as fresh water, sewage and electrical systems and storm-water containment, while the future dry dock will have LED lighting, air-cooled emergency generators, a closed-loop salt water system and storm water recovery systems, the report said.
The dry dock, which will be operational in 2017, is set to be BAE’s largest dry dock in the U.S. and to service other ships besides the various Navy vessels.
According to the company, the investment will also generate new job opportunities in the region.
