biometricsSymantec has partnered with Imprivata to combine their credentialing and identity-proofing technologies to deliver electronic prescription services for controlled substances that comply with the Drug Enforcement Administration‘s requirements.

Imprivata said Tuesday that Symantec, a government-approved credential service provider, will integrate Norton Secure Login and the Symantec Validation and ID Protection Services with Imprivata Confirm ID.

“The integrated solution gives administrators a single workflow for enabling the use of Symantec one-time password tokens and/or Imprivata’s fingerprint biometric identification for [electronic prescribing of controlled substances],” said David Ting, chief technology officer at Imprivata.

The two-factor authentication option works to enable flexibility for e-prescription workflows, the company said.

“We view EPCS as a tremendous market opportunity as organizations look to comply with the rigid security requirements for e-prescribing, enable secure processes for managing identities and data, and address drug diversion and abuse,” added Dawn Swainston, director of business development for healthcare, government and education at Symantec.
