The Defense Information Systems Agency has eased security restrictions on certain data classes in order to shorten the period of cloud services procurements, Federal Times reported Monday.
Gregory Garcia, executive director of the Army Information Technology Agency, expects Defense Department to migrate its applications to the cloud five years from now, Aaron Boyd reports.
“This will be piecemeal, at least at first. It will probably be much more limited before it’s wholesale and enterprisewide,” Stu Fleagle, vice president of government services at Carpathia, told the publication.
The Pentagon announced in December new procurement policies to authorize defense agencies to buy cloud services on their own, according to the report.
Boyd writes public-facing data and websites will be stored in public cloud and a higher security level will cover controlled unclassified information.
The highest security level will apply to unclassified and classified national security data that will reside in separate servers, the report says.
