Red Hat‘s David Egts says government agencies can use Linux container technology to support virtualization efforts in an effort to efficiency and flexibility of their information technology systems.
Egts, the chief technologist at Red Hat’s public sector business, wrote in a piece published Tuesday on GCN that Linux containers include applications that agencies can deploy as a single package through isolated host systems.
He said the technology primarily offers system functions for speed of performance, density of containment and flexibility of operations that exceed those of traditional virtualization.
Egts noted agencies must first work with vendors on implementation best practices, determine application workloads to include in the container and partner with industry on requirements such as orchestration technology.
“Following these steps can help government IT managers take better advantage of containers and turn them into the ideal solution for the hyper-paced, efficiency-starved IT environment,” Egts wrote.
