Matt Truong leads business development functions at NCR Public Sector — a subsidiary of the global consumer transaction technology provider.

Within the U.S. public sector market, NCR works with agencies at the federal, state and local levels to implement information technology products and services for their business operations.

Truong recently caught up with ExecutiveBiz to discuss topics such as NCR’s push to grow in the international public sector market and trends in telecommunications for government agencies.

ExecutiveBiz: What led you to join NCR and what areas have you focused on since?

Matt Truong: NCR is a $6.1 billion-dollar billable company. NCR Public Sector is a subsidiary of NCR that focuses on the services of the federal, state and local government. It has a lot of products and solutions to offer in the federal, state and local space. It may not have been well-known in the industry hence there are plenty of opportunities for me and others in NCR Public Sector group’s to grow and expand.

ExecutiveBiz: How do the state, local and international markets figure into the over-all business strategy?

Matt Truong: They align quite well. The key thing is that we have products and solutions and we have served the state, local, commercial or global markets but we had not had sufficient time, energy or effort to expand in the federal market. NCR Public Sector offers various transactional hardware and software solutions, security offerings and IT professional services.

NCR Public Sector typically partners with myriad strategic large and small federal contractors in the Washington DC area. However, NCR Public Sector would prime on strategic opportunities where NCR is truly the leader in its space.

ExecutiveBiz: What demands in the telecommunications area have you seen in terms of tools and services in your markets?

Matt Truong: There are several demands in the telecom space. The biggest ones are cloud technology in as a solution but also as a consulting service. Most agencies are slowly and cautiously adopting cloud as a solution. I think these agencies may need third-party partners who can actually educate, evaluate and provide proper guidance to these federal agencies. With proper approach, cloud technology can provide flexible, cost-effective, and secured solutions for any agency – large and small.

ExecutiveBiz: Where do you believe industry can best help public sector agencies adapt commercial technologies?

Matt Truong: It is just about awareness. When I first heard about NCR Public Sector I was not even aware it exists and a friend advised me to join the company. He explained the opportunities and the size of opportunities that NCR Public Sector can provide in the federal space. That’s the beginning of a very lucrative friendship.

ExecutiveBiz: What is a trend that you think will become more prominent in 2015?

Matt Truong: Cloud will continue to dominate when consolidation or even expansion take place. If you look at the Army or DHS, more data are being collected, categorized, and consolidated every single day. In addition, mobile security will continue to mature. Everybody wants to access those data in the cloud via wirelessly and securely from their smart devices.
