ContractsDeltek estimates the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded more than $1.9 billion in noncompetitive contracts to industry over the past fiscal year, the Washington Post reported Sunday.

Kathleen Sievers, a Deltek senior manager, writes more than 1,600 companies won contracts from the agency in FY 2014 without a competitive bidding process.

DHS issued approximately 4,300 contracts and task orders on a sole-source basis during fiscal 2014, accounting for nearly $1.4 billion of the department’s total annual contract spending, according to the report.

The FY 2014 sole-source awards also accounted for 70 percent of noncompetitive obligated DHS contract dollars since fiscal 2010, Sievers reports.

Sievers says the DHS’s Advanced Planning Forecast System projects almost 600 upcoming contracts worth at least $150,000 that the agency could award during the current fiscal year.
