Federal agencies that want to acquire cloud computing technologies and services should realize that public cloud platforms are not the only way forward for them as they push to adopt cloud tools, Steve Picot of Vion Corp. has told ExecutiveBiz.

Picot, vice president of federal sales for the federal technology services contractor, also told ExecutiveBiz that agencies should decide what they want at the front end of the acquisition process — a method he termed as “work outward.”

Decisions also should occur on what applications and data should be in a private, on-premise cloud versus a public cloud, he said.

“Organizations must start planning where their applications should go from the start,” Picot added.

“If your data is mission critical, private cloud will provide the highest levels of security and reduced risk.”

Picot will serve as moderator for a panel discussion at the Potomac Officers Club‘s “FY 15 Budget & Procurement Summit” Wednesday, where leaders in academia and government will offer GovCon executives in attendance perspectives on the new rules and realities that have impacted the GovCon industry in this post-sequestration era.

Picot spoke to ExecutiveBiz ahead of the summit to discuss the general spending picture for agencies that have looked to cloud computing as a way to streamline management of data and applications in a changing budget environment.

“Cloud is not a technology, it’s a financial model” and should be looked at as more of a general strategy for agencies, Picot said.

“We need the acquisition community to act in a more agile manner in order to meet the demands of a changing government.”

“Industry’s role is to help maintain security, guarantee compliance, drive awareness and build applications at the right price point.”
