The Air Force could unveil the winner of a contract to build the branch’s long-range radar system as soon as next week, Reuters reported Wednesday.
Andrea Shalal writes Pentagon acquisition chief Frank Kendall has approved the service’s Three-Dimensional Expeditionary Long-Range Radar procurement plan.
Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon are all vying for the contract.
The ground-based 3DELLR platform would replace the existing TPS-75 radar that Air Force uses to detect and track aircraft and missile threats, according to Reuters.
Shalal reports the branch will award an initial contract covering development and low-rate production work and then issue additional manufacturing orders.
Contractors see a potential to offer the 3D long-range radar technology to U.S.’ partner nations, according to Shalal’s article.
