TE SubCom has won a $12.3 million contract to build a fiber-optic cable technology to link U.S. Navy sonar systems on the ocean floor to surveillance facilities ashore, Military & Aerospace Electronics reported Monday.
John Keller writes the company will lay approximately 963 miles of submarine cable that is designed to interface with the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System.
The IUSS network is made-up of fixed electronic and acoustic arrays that work to monitor underwater vehicle traffic as well as potential hostile submarines, according to Keller’s article.
IUSS seafloor instruments include the Sound Surveillance System, Fixed Distributed System-COTS and Advanced Deployable System.
The Navy expects the company to finish work under the contract by July 2015.
