electronic health record EHRDeltek projects U.S. government spending on electronic health record systems and other health information technology platforms to reach almost $5 billion by 2019, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

Angie Petty, a Deltek senior principal research analyst, writes that federal programs and rules for health data management could accelerate use of EHRs, telemedicine and HIT analytics or cloud tools across the government.

EHR modernization efforts at the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs will drive year-over-year growth in the segment, according to Petty’s article.

She noted that several other federal agencies are developing or testing new technologies intended to store, analyze and retrieve clinical data sets.

The National Cancer Institute issued three contracts for the development of a Cancer Genome Atlas cloud computing infrastructure in September, according to the report.

Petty writes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention uses cellphone data technology to predict the spread of Ebola virus in West Africa.
