NetApp logo_EbizNetApp has introduced a new cloud-enabled object storage product that aims to help organizations manage large amounts of unstructured data securely and cost-effectively.

NetApp StorageGRID Webscale supports Amazon Web Services and SNIA cloud data managers, can hold 100 billion objects and can place data automatically, NetApp said Tuesday.

Dan Neault, senior vice president for data center solutions at NetApp, said the new software lays the groundwork for fast, secure and scalable data management.

“Leveraging 10 years of enterprise object-storage experience, StorageGRID Webscale provides a foundation for software-defined, globally distributed object stores with policies that enable IT to govern data placement and protection worldwide,” Neault said.

According to NetApp, StorageGRID Webscale is now available from global partners and that it is already developing the next version, with a 2015 release date.

Later this year, the company plans to roll out an early adopter program for the next version, which it says will include cloud tiering, erasure coding on geo-distributed data and other advanced features.
