Amazon Web Services has expanded its instance offerings for an AWS platform designed to help U.S. government customers process sensitive workloads in cloud environment.

Jeff Barr, AWS chief evangelist, writes in a blog post published Thursday the company added five more EC2 virtual machine types hosted on the AWS GovCloud (US) system.

HS1 instance is designed to provide agencies a high-density storage for parralel file systems, Hadoop applications and data warehousing, according to Barr.

He recommends the use of C3 instances for managing high-performance web servers or compute-intensive apps.

The R3 works to support genome assembly and analysis, distributed memory caches, in-memory analytics and enterprise apps such as Microsoft SharePoint, Barr says.

He says the T2 is built upon a processing allocation model, while I2 instances employ a solid-state drive tool designed for transactional systems and NoSQL databases.
