Technology companies Atmel, Broadcom, Dell, Intel, Samsung and Wind River have partnered to start a consortium that will work to bolster interoperability and define connectivity requirements for products that are a part of the Internet of Things.
The Open Interconnect Consortium seeks to ensure the interoperability of billions of devices that could come online by 2020, the companies said Tuesday.
“Having a connectivity framework that is open, secure and manageable is critical to delivering the foundational elements of that transformation. Consumers and businesses alike will need a strong base upon which to build the vast array of solutions enabled by a global Internet of Things,” said Glen Robson, vice president and CTO for client solutions at Dell.
“Embracing industry standards is a means to bring the best technology solutions to customers, and the Open Interconnect Consortium is very much aligned with this model.”
The OIC aims to deliver specifications, open source code and a certification program for wirelessly connecting IoT devices.
“We invite other industry leaders, whatever their background and vertical specialism, to join [the OIC] in defining and embracing a common communications framework for the Internet of Things,” said Jong-deok Choi, executive vice president and deputy head of software R&D at Samsung Electronics.
