satellite airforceRaytheon will manufacture 84 command post terminals for the U.S. Air Force to use advanced-extremely high-frequency satellite communications, National Defense Magazine reported Thursday.

Stew Magnuson writes that Raytheon will build the service’s Family of Advanced Beyond Line of Sight Terminals under a $298 million contract.

The A-EHF satcom constellation is built to avoid jamming and secure military communications in extreme wartime enviroment, according to the magazine.

“I think we have demonstrated that we are up to the task of delivering that system,” Scott Whatmough, Raytheon vice president for integrated communications systems, told reporters Thursday.

“We have been in this EHF business for 30 years, and the one thing that is consistent is that when this capability becomes available to the war fighter, more and more people want it,” Whatmough added, according to Magnuson’s article.

Raytheon will perform low-rate initial production in two rounds before the Air Force decides on Milestone C approval.

The Lockheed Martin-built A-EHF satellite also serves the U.K., Canada and the Netherlands.
